Visit to Jardin des Plantes

While proofreading the next MESSAGE magazine, I came upon the regular article about visiting in Paris and where to go with kids. This quarter, the focus was on the Jardin des Plantes, which had a great review: a great big park, with lots of flowers, exotic plants, a labryith, maze, playground, musuem etc. What really got my interest was that there was a small zoo with 'not your typical' animals. So, as it was a fairly 'ok' day, ie no rain and wasn't too damp or cold (can you believe that it is August???!!! Geesh), we headed out to Paris to visit the Jardin des Plantes.

We walked around for a while when we got there, looking for the playground, and stopping to admire some of the many flower beds along the way. Once at the playground, Bibou scooted off to explore the play structure (the slides, see saw, climbing thingy), while we went to get some ice cream since it was right next door. We had a lovely treat! And I noticed that Bibou is getting really good at eating ice cream now. She's able to lick the ice cream so that it doesn't dribble down the cone onto her! And she's really enjoying them now!
Once we were done, we set off to the zoo and found a lot of exciting animals. Even before entering the park, there was a display of wallabys, which looked like mini kangeroos. Bibou had fun minicking them, hop hop hop. Inside, Bibou squealed with delight at some of the animals that she could 'recognize' and would make the noises that they make! She certainly enjoyed the monkeys display the most. We also saw these really big and old tortise (like more than 100 years old). Daddy had put Bibou on his shoulder as she couldn't see past the railings. As I tried to take a photo, I asked Bibou to "please look at Mummy so that I can take your photo". Well, little Missy then commanded the tortise "look at Mummy, please!". That was hilarious! We did see many animals there, Red Pandas, Emus, Wallaby, Monkeys, Owls (we even saw Snow Owls - which is what Hedwig was - yes I'm a Harry Potter fan!). Unfortunately, my camera battery died at the begining of our trip, so I didn't manage to take many shots, boo hoo. As we were coming out of the reptile house, the skies had suddenly turned very dark and dangerous, and we tried quickly to get out of there and into the car. Unfortuantely, it poured, before we got into the car.... so we were mostly wet (luckily, Bibou had a hood on her coat as with Mamita and I covered Angel so she too didn't get wet). We were glad to be home!
